Smell of gas: what to do right now
A smell of gas, even a faint one, is never normal. Don't look for the leak yourself and don't touch the boiler: leave the building and call your network operator's gas service. It's free and available day and night.
Right now
- Don't switch anything on or off: no switches, lights, appliances or doorbells. No flames, no cigarettes.
- Open doors and windows.
- Turn off the gas meter tap if you can do it without losing time.
- Get outside, with everyone present. In a flat, warn your neighbours by knocking on their door, without ringing.
- Once outside, call the gas service: Sibelga in Brussels: 0800 19 400 · ORES: 0800 87 087 · RESA, Liège area: 04 362 98 38.
- Fire, explosion or someone feeling unwell: call 112.
- Once the leak is made safe, call us to repair and restart your heating.
Don't
- Looking for the leak with a flame or lighter.
- Phoning or using an electrical appliance indoors.
- Resetting or restarting the boiler before the gas service has been.
Call us if…
- The gas service has made the leak safe and the boiler or installation needs repairing.
- The boiler has been off since the gas service came.
- You want your installation checked.
What does a repair cost?
Call-out and diagnosis: €125 excl. VAT. The repair is extra, and you get its price before we start. We usually come within 24 hours (working days) and let you know 1 hour before we arrive.
This advice applies to most boilers. Every appliance has its quirks: if in doubt, your own manual applies, and we're happy to answer on the phone.
